Climate change is a global challenge and a growing liability but also a business opportunity. In order to tackle climate change and move towards a more sustainable economic model, the role of the commercial banking sector is fundamental to channel the trillions of USD needed to close the climate investment gap.

Climate change is also a major disruption for banks and their clients. Nonetheless, it is an important business opportunity for different industries around the world. As such, the banking industry must adapt and transform itself in order to implement its key role in the development of Green Finance.

In 2017, IFC conducted the “Green Finance Latin America Survey”, identifying challenges and opportunities that the banking sector is facing to become greener.

The result confirmed that one of the main barriers is insufficient knowledge and understanding of the risks and opportunities.

As a result, the FIG (Financial Institutions Group) Climate team in LAC decided to create the IFC-Green Banking Academy (“IFC-GBAC”), a knowledge and capacity building initiative to accelerate the green transformation of banking, which has as main objective strengthening its business and contributing a more sustainable and resilient world.

The IFC-GBAC became the third pillar of IFC’s value offering: Investment + Advisory + Knowledge, to support banks in their green transformation journey.

The value proposition and of the IFC-GBAC (Green Banking Academy)

The academic and training offering is designed and segmented with the goal of covering the needs of any commercial bank from top to bottom: an academic offering for C-Level, for senior management, client-facing, and product specialists, and all the bank’s employees in general.

IFC-GBAC leverages the leading expertise and experience that IFC has developed in the climate finance space for the past several years and supports the ambitious climate targets assured by the WBG to 2030. IFC-GBAC has access to the immense IFC’s pool of knowledge about climate and aims at sharing this knowledge, with the help of key partners, with the banking sector.
